1 dies, 1 suffers ‘life-threatening’ injuries in single-vehicle crash off I-80 in southern Cook County

Two men in their early 20s were traveling together in an older-model vehicle early Sunday when it left the road and hit a light pole, killing one of the men and seriously injuring the other, officials said.

Illinois State Police troopers were called to the southern part of Cook County, not far from the Indiana state line, about 1:45 a.m. A black 2005 Cadillac, headed east on the Interstate 80 exit ramp for Torrence Avenue, lost control and hit a light pole, according to an agency news release. No other vehicles were involved.

The 23-year-old driver, Andres Hernandez of Northlake, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. His passenger, also 23 and a Harvey resident, was being treated at an area hospital for injuries considered life-threatening, officials said. Details about the extent and type of his injuries were not immediately available.

Investigators said Hernandez lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons before hitting the light pole on the exit ramp. That ramp was closed off about 2:40 a.m. for the investigation and cleanup, officials said. The ramp reopened about 5:30 a.m., state police said.
